What is the Sustainable Agriculture Loan Scheme?  

The Sustainable Agriculture Loan Scheme is currently in development for launch later in 2026. Its aim is to provide accessible, incentivised finance for farm businesses in Wales, supporting them to transition to more sustainable models of food production and land management.

The funding package:

  • 3% fixed interest rate loan
  • £25,000 - £1 million
  • Up to 15-year repayment term
  • 6-month upfront repayment holiday

Eligible investments will include:

  • Renewable energy generation for on farm use
  • Energy efficiency and storage
  • Waste and nutrient management
  • Farm infrastructure and assets - including equipment, processing and storage

Non-eligible investments will include:

  • Cash flow funding
  • Land acquisition
  • Building acquisition
  • Rental costs
  • Livestock purchase
  • Succession funding

 

Eligible businesses

Please note the scheme is designed to provide support to active farm businesses in Wales. As such applicants must:

  • undertake agricultural or ancillary activities on agricultural land (as defined by the Agriculture (Wales) Act 2023
  • have at least three hectares of eligible agricultural land in Wales or be able to demonstrate more than 550 standard labour hours
  • have exclusive occupation and management control of the land for at least 10 months of the calendar year

The Scheme is designed to work in alignment with the Sustainable Farming Scheme.
