Business overview

ALS Managed Services, trading as ALS People, is a Caerphilly-based provider of managed workforce solutions operating across the UK.

Founded in 2011, the business specialises in the recycling, warehousing, distribution and manufacturing sectors. It combines recruitment delivery with on-site operational management, supply chain oversight and compliance governance, helping customers manage high-volume temporary workforces across multiple locations.

Led by Chief Executive Phil Tromans, ALS has grown significantly since its previous management buyout in 2018. Turnover has increased from £13.3 million to more than £60 million, while its headcount has doubled.

The latest management buyout marks the next stage in the company’s development, providing continuity for the business as it expands its managed workforce services and develops relationships with new and existing customers.

Working with us

Date of most recent funding round: 2026
Size: £3.75 million
Funds: Wales Management Succession Fund and Wales Flexible Investment Fund

We provided a £3.75 million equity and debt package to part-fund the second management buyout of ALS Managed Services. The investment has enabled the management team, led by Phil Tromans, to take the business into its next phase of growth.

The funding provides ALS with a platform to expand its UK-wide operations and offer its managed workforce solutions to more customers in sectors with complex, high-volume labour requirements. It will also help the company strengthen existing client relationships while maintaining its focus on compliance, workforce stability and reliable service delivery.

Our relationship with ALS dates back to 2018, when we contributed to a £1 million finance package that supported its previous management buyout. Our equity stake was subsequently bought back by the company in 2021.

The latest investment demonstrates how succession and growth finance can support a business through different stages of ownership. By working with ALS over the long term, we’ve helped provide stability and continuity while backing an experienced management team to take forward its plans for further growth.

What people are saying

Phil Tromans, Chief Executive of ALS Managed Services, said:

“We’ve built a strong track record since the previous buy-out in 2018, and this investment allows us to deepen our partnerships with existing clients while expanding our managed service offering to new customers who are looking for a more structured, accountable approach to labour provision.

“The Development Bank of Wales has played an important role in supporting the business through each stage of development. The buyout gives us stability, continuity and a strong platform to take ALS forward.”

Jo Thomas, Deputy Fund Manager at the Development Bank of Wales, said:

“ALS Managed Services is a strong example of how experienced management teams can drive long-term growth. Having successfully supported the business through the previous buyout, we’re pleased to back Phil and the team as they take ownership and lead the next phase.

“This is a great example of how we support Welsh businesses through the full cycle of ownership, from succession and MBOs to long-term growth and reinvestment.”
