Sustainability Manager

We are recruiting for a Sustainability Manager based in Cardiff

The sustainability manager will lead on embedding the Development Bank’s commitment to environmental and social sustainability. You will develop policies and strategies to build our credibility and influence, making sure we lead by example in our operations and supporting customers to address sustainability in theirs, increasing the impact of our investment activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a group wide sustainability strategy, aligned to the corporate plan 2022 – 27
  • Act as secretariat to the sustainability governance group to effectively manage sustainability and ESG projects
  • Work closely across internal departments (investments, procurement, facilities, communications) to incorporate sustainability considerations into policies and decision making
  • Ensure effective data collection for emissions disclosures/reporting
  • Manage data collection methods and submission for our impact investment framework
  • Analyse and produce reports and insights from data
  • Develop and manage an environmental engagement, education and training programme for colleagues
  • Represent the Group externally in meetings and speaking opportunities on sustainability and ESG
  • Contribute content for thought leadership to influence customers   
  • Be the ESG point of contact in discussions with external stakeholders, including investors
  • Work closely with the portfolio and investment teams to provide analysis and support on incorporating sustainability/ESG in investment decisions and support given to portfolio companies. Make practical recommendations on how to further engage with our portfolio of customers and champion the benefits with customer facing colleagues
  • Provide technical support on sustainably focused funds or services
  • Take an observer role on our investment committee when needed and provide support and challenge to investment committee members on ESG considerations
  • Co-ordinate activity around attainment of standards related to sustainability and ESG
  • Line management responsibility providing training and guidance where required
  • Any other task as may be defined by the Communications Director to meet the operational needs of the organisation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience

Essential 

  • A strong background in sustainability and practical application to SMEs
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging sustainability and disclosure standards, bodies, standards and public policy
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to influence and enthuse others
  • Critical thinking and analysis and an ability to develop evidence-based strategies
  • Confident speaker at public events  
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take a proactive approach and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise and organise work under pressure

Desirable 

  • Experience of working with or within a financial services company providing support on the integration of sustainability into an investment and/or fundraising strategy  
  • Knowledge of the Development Bank of Wales Group
  • Welsh speaker
