Gareth Mayhead

I focus on equity investments for companies based in Wales, or those relocating, who have a strong technology position with significant growth potential. My main areas of expertise are in IP management, strategy and commercialisation.

While I have very broad technology experience, I’m really interested in clean technologies, energy solutions and transitioning away from fossil fuels. I am based in north Wales and while I look at investment opportunities across the whole of Wales, I am particularly keen to work with high technology businesses in mid and north Wales.

Prior to joining Development Bank of Wales, I spent over 10 years managing technology transfer at universities (Swansea and Bangor). I have helped to commercialise a broad range of technologies through identification, evaluation and management of intellectual property (IP). I’ve led on the execution of deals on over 10 university spin-out and start-up companies. As a result, I am adept at negotiating and finding elegant solutions to get deals done. I have sat on the board of a range of technology-based companies.

Before entering technology transfer, I spent six years at University of California Berkeley as a biomass specialist. Prior to this, I had diverse roles ranging from contract research and development in fibre science to economic development and grants management.
